Who doesn’t have the image of a perfect man in his mind when hearing the word "gentleman"? An elegantly dressed man with good manners, a charming charisma and an eye for detail. That's how you imagine him. Here are 10 Rules of a Gentleman:
1. Dress well no matter what the occasion.
No matter what type of event you’re attending, your focus should be hitting it “just right” — neither too dressy, nor too casual. The best way to ensure this happens is to understand the room you’re walking into before you get there. Doing your homework prior to picking your outfit is the surest path to success.
2. Never go broke to impress others.
Never go broke trying to impress others. It's important to live within our means and not fall into the trap of trying to impress others with material possessions. Instead, focus on being confident and comfortable in who you are, and let your inner qualities shine through.
3. Be kind and show respect.
Kindness is the new cool. Manners are the glue...
4. Listen more than you talk.
This wisdom has been around for a long time: “We have two ears and one mouth, so we should listen more than we say.” When you talk, you’re repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you might learn something new. Like Richard Branson said, nobody ever learned anything by hearing themselves speak.
5. Never shake a hand sitting down.
Standing up to shake a hand is a sign of self respect and respect to others.
6. Always carry cash.
All in all, cash is a more generous way to pay and tip. Keep in mind though that if you don't have enough cash on hand, it's certainly better to tip adequately with your card than to leave a smaller amount or nothing in cash.
7. Read as much as you can and stay up to date.
Knowledge is power and great minds are always feared by lesser minds.
8. Mid the basic table manners & dinning etiquette.
Proper etiquette is essential for making a favorable impression at both lunch/dinner interviews as well as in social business situations.
9. Maintain a good posture while sitting and standing.
Sit up in your chair. And stand tall. Not only is it better for your health, but it helps you project a more powerful image.
When you slouch, you look unsure of yourself. You look weak. You look kind of sad and depressed. And that is not someone that a stranger – man or woman – would want to talk or listen to.
But when you stand with good posture, you look more confident, you look powerful, and you look like someone people will listen to.
10. Take 1-3 second pause to think after being asked a question.
Answering a question too quickly can sometimes lead to the opposite impression you are trying to make. Learn how pausing before answering can be very powerful and help to create a good rapport with your audience.
